Day Four of the Halloween edition of “What Do Horror Fans Want?” Today, we break the seal on the gender barrier as Tammy Dupal, the “Gore Whore” of Twisted Central breaks it down for us.
I deal with a number of horror fans on a daily basis and I can tell you from experience that what we need less of are remakes. Remakes are killing the horror genre. There are so many people out there with original ideas and great stories (ahem, Adam Green) that get little to no recognition at all. We are bombarded weekly with things we’ve seen before. Sure, some of them are good but for the most part they suck the air out of us.
If I may get into a little more detail:
Michael Meyers doesn’t prance through fields and dream of his dead mom dragging around a white horse nor does he take prisoners. He didn’t want to “keep” his sister, he wanted to kill her. Laurie Strode wasn’t a foul mouthed little cunt with an anger problem and Dr. Loomis wasn’t a money hungry bastard on a power trip. Those things absolutely ruined Halloween for me.
Jason Voorhees is another one that takes no prisoners. He has no mercy on anyone. If you get in his way he will turn you into a flaming shish kabob. That’s what he does! That’s what makes him so frightening. He doesn’t use spot lights to search out his victims he just knows where there are and he doesn’t toy with one to make the rest come to him. He comes to you! Again, ruined Friday the 13th for me.
I really don’t understand the remake fad but studios are apparently making money on it and as long as that’s the case they will continue to produce unimaginative crap and send it straight out to us.
What we need instead is for more people to stand up in support of independent horror because, let’s face it, that’s where all the ideas are coming from these days. Whatever happened to Project Greenlight? The whole premise for that reality type show was to support indie horror and as far as I can tell, it’s just vanished. I’m not a huge Ti West fan but at least his ideas are original not recycled bullshit that we’ve seen before. After Dark Horror Fest seems to be the best at highlighting these directors and actors that devote their free time to making fresh, interesting horror films.
Having watched horror films for so long, there’s really not much that scares me anymore. If I had to pick one area I’d have to say it’s the home invasion horror. That to me seems more realistic than any other aspect of the genre. Films like ‘The Strangers’ and ‘Funny Games’ make me nervous and have me double checking the locks on my doors after dark. Any film that can just completely psych you out is what scares me. If it can get inside and mindfuck ME, then it has to be a pretty convincing flick.
